Greetings! It’s time to talk Valhalla Surge, so let’s go over some of the basics.

A little intro first…

So back when I started playing SFSB three or so months ago, I was getting my butt kicked by mostly 3 characters:

  1. Movie Super Shadow.
  2. Oni Mephilis.
  3. Valhalla Surge.

I thought I’d never get to chance to actually be on the other side of the coin.

So imagine my surprise, when a few days ago, the challenge event came back! And not only for Surge, but also for Oni Mephilis, Grim Sonic and a few more.

I was all in…

So I did all I could (including paying a little money), to unlock Valhalla Surge and level her up as much as possible.

In the following text, I’ll be looking at everything Surge related, and I’ll keep updating the post as I continue playing her.

How To Unlock Valhalla Surge

Valhalla Surge is part of the “Challenger” characters, and thus, is only unlockable during certain events also known as the “Challenger events” which happen every so often.

In the case of Surge and all other challenger characters, you’ll need a minimum of 500 challenger cards to unlock her.

How To Get Challenger Cards

There different ways to get challenger cards, while the event is live. Some of these are:

  • Win Challenger Chests: Winning or taking 2nd place in any race where there’s a challenger, will award you a challenger chest with at least 10 challenger cards. Chests can be opened with 30 RSR or after a 30 minute wait.
  • Complete Missions: These give out between 10-50 challenger cards. Missions reset after a few hours, but you can pay increasing amounts of RSR to have another go.
  • Unlock Tails’s Vault: This unlock costs $9.99 USD, and basically gives you the same amount of cards and rings you’ve already collected throughout the even (including missions). You can pay $16.99 to 3x the amount.
  • Watch Ads: Complete the “Mystery Gift” chest on the homepage, to unlock some challenger cards as well as 3,000 rings and 25 RSR.
  • Check Store: Even though this is probably the least reliable way to get cards…you do get a free 10-50 card bonus by checking the store. I think there’s a refill every 24 hours, so you’ll want to check regularly.

(50% Card Boosts:) This only works with challenger chests, but you can use the card boost to increase the card rewards. A good idea, would be to have 4 chests ready to open when you unlock it, and then try to win a few more races before the time expires.

Valhalla Surge Stats

Valhalla Surge has the following stats:

Speed 10/10

Speeds determines the maximum speed a character can reach during the race. Surge has the highest speed possible, which also is affected by the amount of rings and character level you are.

Acceleration 7/10

Acceleration tracks how quickly a character can reach their top speed.

Strength 7/10

Strength determines how much speed a character loses when taking damage from opponents or obstacles.

Valhalla Surge Attacks

All characters in the game, have 3 possible attacks. These are projectile, boosts and trap attacks. In the case of Valhalla Surge, these attacks are:

Berserker’s Axes

This projectile attack, throws 2 axes on opposing lanes that stick to the ground. You can pick them up and re throw them up to two more times. Any opponent who gets hit, also drops an item.

This attack is surprisingly effective, although not very strong, having the option of re-throw is really neat, and I’ve personally hit the same opponent with the same axe, multiple times.

Viking Offense:

This attack gives Surge a boost + invincibility for a limited time or until you get hit 3 times. You can also hit enemies while you’re boosting.

Thunder Shield Wall:

This trap attack spawns three shields on all other lanes that go up and down at random times. Opponents that get hit with the shields, also drop their items. Super strong move.

Valhalla Surge Strategies

I’ve been playing with Valhalla Surge for a while, and here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Use the Boost Strategically: Not all boosts give invincibility, but Valhalla Surge does. In some maps, using the boost + invincibility strategically, allows you to be a bit more reckless and target the boosts on the ground or behind columns, without fear of getting hit.
  • Axes & Lanes: Surge throws axes to both of her sides, but if you’re on lane 1 or on lane 4, she’ll only throw one axe instead of 2. In most of the cases, you’ll want o have 2 axes on the tracks instead of one, so time your throws!
  • Shield Pattern: The trap attack seems to spawn shields that move up and down randomly. Just like with other characters, the lane you’re in is the one that won’t have traps, but I’ve not personally been able to figure out how to reliably not hit the other three. Don’t get too fancy and “stay in your lane”, getting hit with your own shields slow you down a lot!
  • Late Game “Spam Attack”: Late game, as opposed to many other characters, you can really clog up the race track with her attacks. I usually go nuts in smaller maps and try to pick up as many axes along the way as I can, basically spamming the field. This is super effective against most opponents.

  • “Bubble Strat”: One strategy I’ve been using lately with some success, is basically just farming bubble items. Because Surge is fairly fast, you can take the lead early on. If you manage to get slightly ahead, you can opt not to use projectile or trap items, and the game will give you bubble items instead. Grab and use bubbles, and focus on getting to 100 rings and using the paths that will give you boosts instead of items. Sometimes opponents won’t be able to catch up.
  • Bubble + Item Spam: Similar to the bubble strat, but instead of using multiple bubbles, simply save the bubble and spam shields or axes as soon as you get them. This allows you to have protection just in case, but also keep your opponents behind. You have to be ready to use the bubble at any moment though!
  • End Game Boost Strat: This strategy won’t always work (specially if you’re up against characters that can make you lose your items) but you can opt not to use the boost early on, and save it for the end game. Since Valhalla Surge is pretty quick, you can catch up to opponents even if you’re behind, and use the boost later. The game won’t give you a boost close to the end if you’re in 1rst place, so having one as backup can steal the win.

Wrap Up

There it is folks, that’s Valhalla Surge for you, from the Sonic Forces: Speed Battle game.

If you ever get the chance to play, unlock or even main and upgrade Valhalla Surge, I’d totally recommend it.

She’s both super strong offensively (something I was missing when playing as Silver main, for so long) and has an ok late game and defense (although being pretty weak against super characters).

Later!
